Quick bug fix

This is just a quick bug fix that should hopefully prevent the media corruption people have been reporting. It should also fix the bug reported by Brian (thanks for the crash dump).

Cool, thanks for the quick response. I’m trying it out now.

Just to give you a little more feedback, I found that when I moved my dscent files to the root folder the problem went away, so I’m checking to see if this problem still exists in the bugfix.

I set up DScent alpha 4.1 in my R4DS. I just had everything in a folder called DScent. The R4DS auto-patches the DLDI as of firmware version 1.10, so I didn’t DLDI patch it manually. I did get a save game error twice during the 3rd level, but the game never crashed and then seemed to work fine and save fine after that. I was having a lot of fun with it and played until the 5th level. I saved my game and shut down.

When I rebooted my R4, it hung at the loading screen. I discovered that it corrupted the _DS_MENU.DAT and/or the _DS_MENU.SYS files, because when I replaced those files on the card, it loaded again. I was worried that there may be further corruption, so I preceded to delete everything from the card. As I was doing that, theme09 in my R4’s _system_ folder refused to delete. It kept saying something about the folder not being empty or some such thing. I was forced to format the card to clear it. Luckily, I keep a backup of my entire card’s contents and was able to recover all my other stuff.

I’ve never had a problem with card corruption before.

I’m not complaining, I just thought you would like to be advised of problems with your excellent Descent port in the hopes that you will be able to debug the problem.

Small update to my issues with the game crashing..

I was having exception after exception, crashes mentioning various *.c components and resource file errors… Then I disabled music.

I have yet *after 2 days* to have a single error or so much as a hiccup. I’ve loaded maps 1 - 8, 12, 15, and 27 and they all work great. One word of advice to any who try this- every time you run the game you must turn the music up in options and back down, even though it saves the position of the volume slider. Otherwise the music will play as normal.

I don’t know if this will work for others [ I’m running off the GnM card ] or if it hardware-specific to me, but I’m amazed at how stable this game is now!

Had another crash today while loading a savegame for level 16. I wasn’t in a position to be able to take down the crash dump, and it didn’t re-occur later on. Hopefully knowing that it occurred during the load of a savegame will help.

Have a new dump for you. This happened while I was colliding with one of those red robots that gets in your face, and makes very little noise.

  8. Randolph Says:

I know this is completely off-topic and way too early to be talking about this, but my god how sweet would it be to implement elements down the road from the descent II engine to run campaigns from both games?…. Okay I’ll shut up and provide useful information in the future like Brian :)
